I suppose the next lesson is "It's raining today. Where is my umbrella ?".

Bryan! Make me a sandwich! I want toasted bread, butter, tomatoes and some slices of roast beef but no pickles please. There is no hurry but I start to feel hungry so I hope you'll prepare that sandwich quickly.Pantalaemon a écrit :We can start with the basics. Repeat after me "Where is Brian ? Brian is in the kitchen"
What? I have homework? Where?

Crountie, killing birds is bad, except if it wakes you up. This bird should show you more respect.

That's what it was originally meant for Wendy .Wendy a écrit :It would be great to improve my english thanks to this topic.
Glad to see some people are still interested in using it. I use English every day myself except at home so I don't use it much anymore but I can start back I guess.
What do you want to work on?
Writing English is usually easier for us Frenchies than speaking it because we have ze terribel accent a la pepe le piou and it takes some work to get rid of it .
I don't know how often I'll be able to come by especially since I am now working 6 days a week bleh but I'm quite happy to help if you want as I am sure everyone who has answered your message
cheers

Re: Come on in... we speak ze eenglish (or try to)
My English teacher told us that the problem is less the French accent than the accentuation on the good syllabe. You can speak well or pretend to have a perfect accent like a native British or American but if the accentuation is bad, it is quite impossible to be really understood... So, it's better to have a bad accent with a good accentuation rather than making a fool of yourself.
But I don't know if it's true in practice with someone who is used to speaking English every day. Eä or Panta ?

I think that for the accent as well as for the accentuation, you should try to watch TVSeries and films without any subtitles, and everytime you don't quite understand what they say, you listen again until you finally get it. I don't know for anyone else, but it helped me a lot ^^
(And though it's certainly not my role to correct you : Lilyrose, it's "to be used to doing smthg" )

Well, obviously practice is quite important, but we don't get a lot of occasions of doing so. >w< Although, this semester, we had a td-man who didn't speak french, so we had to speak english with him two hours a week. ^^

My accent is also very bad. My English teachers didn't think my level was awful, but they couldn't help making faces when I spoke.
I have no problem for reading. Now I can watch English or American movies and understand 75% of them. But, I have a lot of difficulties when I have to express myself. I sometimes lack vocabulary.

Nothing better than to live for 1 year with an Italian and a Brasilian whose accents cannot be understood by your friends to train your ear for any weird pronunciation
I think accentuation is not everything, I am better understood when I don't properly accentuate but correctly pronounce. However, it would be hard to say, because my accent is more Germanic and I "naturally" accentuate in a different fashion than French people do (Belgium Rules).

Re: Come on in... we speak ze eenglish (or try to)
Really ? How do you define a Germanic accent ? I have always found that it was more discreet than mine.
Re: Come on in... we speak ze eenglish (or try to)
Panta, according to my teachers, good accentuation implies good pronunciation. Once you've stressed the right syllable, your choice of diphtongues dramatically falls.
However, I think that french teachers are too much obsessed with accentuation ; when I was in "prepa", there was basically three kinds of teachers :
- the french ones, appalled by my speeches ;
- the very oxbridgian ones, who thought I had to put a drop of accentuation in my allocutions ;
- the american ones, who did not even care (or at least, they gave good advice...)
Eventually, I decided to continue the same way. As long as I can speak with americans 3,000 miles from here without any problem, I do not see the point with accentuation.
Oh ! And the best accent is the indian one !

Re: Come on in... we speak ze eenglish (or try to)
Your description of the "English Teachers in prepa" is quite good. I met the very oxbridgian one (who used to make faces when I spoke) and the American teacher who let me speak, even if I didn't pronounced my sentences well. When you are not interrupted by a shocked teacher every time you do not have the "good accent", it is easier to be understood and to speak fluently.
